Only We Can Move Our Union in the Right Direction

Since the merger, Andy Stern and his appointed leadership have been pushing for a one-size fits all strategy for all the counties in 521 and the rest of the public sector locals – at the expense of 521 members. We want to change this. First steps are: eliminating centralized call-in centers, implementing chapter by-laws and Local-wide by-laws, and holding local elections, election of all 521 officers to replace appointed officials.

Demand an Election for 521 Officers

According to the rules of the merger in the summer of 2006, we have the right to elect our own officers by June 2009. But Andy Stern and SEIU still won’t let us determine our own leadership. We demand a real election now.

Restore Democracy at Local 521

According to the rules of the merger in the summer of 2006, we have the right to elect our own officers by June 2009. But Andy Stern and SEIU still won’t let us determine our own leadership. We demand a real election now.

Be a Member Driven Union

Since Andy Stern and SEIU merged our five locals and appointed Kristy Sermersheim as the head of our union, we have functioned with appointed leadership and provisional by-laws. This is not union democracy – that’s why we need real elections to choose our local leaders, not phony elections forced on us by Andy Stern. Members should have input into all decisions, whether they are Local-wide or Chapter-level.

Eliminate the Call Center

Our dues money is funding this call center and it is not working. This is one more reason why we need to elect our own leaders: they will prioritize our issues and not outsource them to an anonymous center that doesn’t know us, our employers, or our contracts.

We oppose Stern’s phony election. The only election we want right now is an election for 521 Chapter and Local officers.
